Collapsing Pink Palace, Portugal

The Pink Palace is an ornate country house, standing derelict on a rural hillside in the north of Portugal. From the outside, it looks like a fairytale castle blended with Gothic Revival and Victorian designs. Its beautiful pink facade and gorgeous main stairway are collapsing. The walls have crumbled away, leaving the heart of the house open to the elements.

I explored The Pink Palace during my Portugal 2025 Tour.

A north Portugal quinta, with mysterious history

Unfortunately, this is one property I am unable to locate much history on. It is likely a “quinta”; a residence that is part of a traditional winemaking estate. Given the region’s location and the grandeur of its design compared to the surrounding buildings, this classification seems likely. The vineyards associated with this estate must have turned sizeable profits once upon a time! Like other quintas in the region, it likely was built in the late 19th century or early 20th century

Dwelling on the Architecture & details

The spectacular building displays a clear romantic architectural style with visible Victorian and Gothic influences. This blend of styles was also popular in the early 19th to early 20th centuries across the pond in America.

The Pink Palace has a steeply pitched roof and tall gables. The gables and roof ridges feature tall metal final spikes, emphasising the vertical height of the three-storey building. The slender French windows add to this effect. Wrought-iron railings secure the upper-floor balconies. Atop the roof, above the main stairway, is a metal turret that was once lined with polychrome glass (a few fragments remain, around its base!). This one covered the cupola, the circular skylight above the stairwell.

The vergeboards are exquisitely intricate with hand-carved designs; this type of design is called a fretted vergeboard. They extend above the roofline, supported by wrought iron finals on the gable peaks. Scale-shaped ceramic tiles in a red-and-white chequered pattern cover the upper sections of the facade.

A few years earlier, I had explored a very similar quinta, likewise located in the winemaking northern regions of Portugal. These houses are almost twins; their designs are so similar!

This one was blue, which I call “Casa Azul / Chalet Do Conde”.

A precarious visit inside the collapsing Pink Palace

Inside the main house, the structural woodwork shows severe decay. Likely a mixture of termites and dry rot. The main staircase remains standing, but only barely. I walked up these steps to reach the upper floor very cautiously. Without a doubt, there are some of the most dangerous stairs I have climbed! From the upper landing, two external walls have fallen completely away, flanking the stairs with curious symmetry.

Aside from the stairs and one small room on the upper floor, most of the other rooms are collapsing and too dangerous to enter. Others have collapsed completely and are a jumble of broken belongings and broken roof/wall fragments. Once, they were beautiful spaces with elaborate plasterwork mouldings and frescoes. Now they are a chaotic jumble!
