Hotel Kurpark, Germany

The Hotel Kurpark is an abandoned hotel located in Germany. For many years this town was one of the most famous spa resorts in the country. At first this hotel was one of the most luxurious, but over time newer hotels and facilities forced it to close.

I explored this location during the Germany 2018 Easter Tour.

History of the Hotel Kurpark

The hotel, which dates back to the late 1800s, overlooks a beautiful park. The park itself is bordered by several other hotels. A wealthy family originally owned the building and used it as a summer home. Eventually, the home was sold to a group of investors who converted it into a spa hotel. This region is known for its natural hot springs and sulphurous mud. The healing waters have been used to treat joint pain as well as cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic disorders at the numerous health spas since the 18th century. Hotel Kurpark was known for its beautiful gardens, its luxurious rooms, and its excellent spa facilities. Additionally, there was a large restaurant, which was divided into several rooms.

In the late 20th century Hotel Kurpark began to struggle, partially due to a downturn in the German economy. Additionally, there has been a phased reinvestment in the region more recently. New hotels offering more modern accommodation and treatment facilities were built. Many of the older hotels with dated decor, such as this one, were the first to close. When I visited, the hotel had stood abandoned for some years.

Ownership of the Hotel Kurpark has now passed on to developers who plan to renovate and reopen the spa. However, there are no signs of any progress at the hotel. There appear to be some funding issues, which are awaiting resolution before work can begin.
