Maison de Damask, France

Maison de Damask is an abandoned late 19th Century French mansion. Hidden by tall hedges, the mansion stands out among the more modern buildings surrounding it. The inside is exceptionally well-preserved, appearing to be frozen in time since the day it was abandoned. Only the black mold patches on the walls and subtle natural decay confirm that this was indeed a lost place. Maison de Damask has a very classic Parisian feel to it, with its nostalgic decor and homely features.

The sitting room featured textured grey Damask-printed wallpaper, inset into panels. These are accented with pale blue surrounds, and gold and white-painted beading and decorative mouldings. The well-worn and moldy sofa compliments this colour scheme perfect. It appears that books and conversation were the favoured pass-times in this room, the small CRT television is tucked away and appears to be merely an afterthought. A cross stands above the television.

Next door, is the piano room. The pristine grand piano is quite stunning against the bold green striped wallpaper and yellow curtains. The afternoon light filtering through the partially shutter windows gave this room a pleasant homely feel. Paintings and sketches of children decorate the wall above the grand piano.

At the other side of the corridor is the dining room, with pink ceiling and kitsch floral wall tiles. Letters on a side table date to 2016, but the decay suggest the house has been empty longer than this. A small corridor leads to a small kitchen and a rustic feeling kitchenette area.

An upstairs bedroom has colourful pastel furniture, having a distinctly feminine feel. There are several books next to the sofa, mainly history and fiction novels.
