Red Messiah Church, Austria
Red Messiah Church is a disused 18th Century church, tucked away in a secluded mountainous area of Austria. The interior has a very striking Gothic style, with beautifully carved dark wooden pews strewn with cobwebs and years of dust.
There are many rocks piled up at the back of the altar area, partially obscuring a very ancient-looking painting.
The pulpit is off centre, raised up high so the preacher would have an unobstructed view of the congregation before him. The numerous and detailed carvings are accented and picked out in golden paint.
Bold paintings appear on the ceilings, and in an arch above the altar. These are predominately red in colour; it is from these that the locations name is likely derived.
In recent years this place has sadly been vandalised and now bears tasteless graffiti. A sad assault on such a beautiful religious building.
