Mold Boetiek is a decaying and abandoned shop located in Belgium. This vacant shop front is located in a busy town street. All you have to do is open the door. Inside the air is damp and heavy. Black mold clings to the walls, and green algae colonised the floor. We visited this mold-filled shop towards the end of the Belgium Winter 2019 – The Pre-Brexit Tour.
I am unable to find much information about Mold Boetiek. Two brothers owned the shop, or so the story goes. They enjoyed years of success. Perhaps the times changed, perhaps new competition arose. Maybe this is just one of many high-street casualties of the age of online shopping. Whatever the reason, the brothers went bankrupt. The shop now lies abandoned and decaying.
The Mold Boetiek clearly sold clothes. There is a large area of the shop where clothes hung on rails, displayed ready for sale. At the front of the shop, there are some shelves and wire racking. Here there are shirts and blouses, still neatly folded and inside their plastic packaging. There are also changing rooms; the sign above the female changing room can still be seen.
Towards the rear of Mold Boetiek is the checkout desk. On top of the desk is a vintage radio, as well as some receipt printing machines and a Rolodex. Next to the checkout desk as more shelves. The shelves hold many box files and folders. The weight of the folders has caused the shelves to sag. Some of the shelving has reached the breaking point and collapsed. It seems strange that such a large amount of records and folders would be stored in the shop front. You would expect this kind of item to be kept in the back somewhere, in a staff-only area.
