2023 was an absolutely amazing year for adventures. Looking back over my collection of photos and folders, I would even dare say it was perhaps the best year yet! I explored and photographed lost places in 11 countries, which must be a record. What a wonderful 12 months, and it has been an absolute joy to compile this end-of-year blog post.
I decided to change the blog format a little this year, and I hope you enjoy this new format 2023 round-up!
An amazing year exploring England, Scotland & Wales
One planned trip quickly turned into three trips to Ireland, I just couldn’t get enough of the Emerald Isle
After waiting (perhaps a little too long), I finally explored lost places in Poland
I was thrilled to have an amazingly successful Back To The Baltics Tour (Latvia & Lithuania)
My trip to Lebanon, a beautiful country filled with some of the kindest people I have ever met
A quick stopover in Cyprus on the way home from Lebanon.
A brief trip to the south of France, towards the end of summer
A last-minute, long weekend trip to Germany to visit a particularly beautiful 9-pin bowling alley (Kegelbahn). Sometimes something is so pretty, I just have to see it 🙂
This year, my film photography journey has taken over. Now, I always bring a film camera (or two) along with me on trips. My grandad’s Zenit-E will be my long-term travel companion (that much is certain). This year I purchased some new, wider-angle lenses to enable me to shoot with more variety. Firstly a Mir-2b (37mm), which I used for most of this summer. Later, in the autumn, I added the marvellous Mir-20 to my collection.
I also began to use other film formats, beginning with a hand-me-down Kodak Duaflex II. This year I picked up two folding bellows cameras: an Olympus Chrome Six, and later a Moskva-5. I also fell in love with subminiature formats, namely 16mm Kiev cameras. I picked up a Kiev-30, as well as a Kiev-303 and thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with these tiny shooters!
You can check out more of my film photography in the Film & Vintage Lens area of my blog, where I share film stock reviews alongside photos I have taken. I have also added two film photography portfolios to my website, covering monochrome and colour photos.
Obsidian’s Obscura is a zine showcasing an eclectic range of images, highlights from my photographic adventures. Through these pages, I will explore and experiment with a new way to share my own unique view of the world. There will be a heavy focus on my film photography journey, as well as presenting themed portfolios and other standalone projects.
Obsidian’s Obscura is available as a limited-edition print run, numbered and signed. A celebration of the ephemeral nature of this publication.
In issue #001, I celebrate the first anniversary of my film photography journey. I reflect on the first time I picked up my Grandad’s old film camera. I share my experiences shooting my first two rolls of film, practising around my home at first before shooting my first film photos of abandoned places. Physical copies of issue #001 sold out fast, but there is still a digital version available.
I think this is turning into a tradition! It was a pleasure to design the third edition of my calendar this year! With my Beautiful Abandoned Places Calendar 2024 I kept a similar layout/format to last year, as this really was an improvement from the first edition. This year I did make one big change; all the photos inside were taken in 2023, rather than being an assortment of my favourite photos from my portfolio. This was a wonderful way to mark an eventful year with so many trips and adventures.
Thanks to everyone who bought one of these, I will certainly be making a new one next year.
We say goodbye to several locations this year, here are some notable casualties of 2023;
2023 marked a year where some of my favourite locations saw the start of renovation/restoration;
What photograph caught your eye the most? How did this location make you feel? Do you have a question? Let me know by leaving a comment!
I add new content every week, ranging from exciting new locations to blog articles about my road trips. My beautiful newsletter will bring my photographic adventures direct to your inbox!

It’s lovely to have an overview of the locations you visited, 2023 was a busy year for you! Some reads fill me with sadness, when these beauties are either demolished or destroyed by fire. On a happier note, 2023 seemed a good year for restoring many of these beautiful and sometimes historic buildings. Looking forward to following you through 2024 and some. Thank you.
Thanks so much, I hope 2024 is a great year for you also 🙂
