Who says the best trips need to be planned? This trip kind of materialised out of the ether in the most wonderful way. I am never one to overthink things when spontaneous adventures are afoot, so I booked a flight for the next day. The main objective was actually not entirely urbex related. The main reason for this super last minute trip was to surprise a friend. The urbex was very much secondary on my mind to be honest. Safe to say, the surprise went down very well (hurrah!). This trip was a wonderful few days among friends, and surprisingly a lot of locations visited given the short days!
I had so much fun in Georgia and Armenia shooting with my grandad’s old Helios-44 58mm lens attached to my Sony camera. As soon as I got home I bought two rolls of budget black and white film, Kentmere Pan 400. With my film locked and loaded, Grandad’s Prinzflex 500E (Zenit E) joined me on this trip to Belgium.
The strange location of the tripod screw mount mean the quick release plate was to the extreme edge. Very precarious and unstable! For my next outing I have an idea that involves a modified L-bracket (and I also need to pick up a shutter release cable, as the slowest shutter speed of 1/30 won’t cut it in dark abandoned places!).
You can check out some of my film photographs from this trip over on Kentmere Pan 400 (35mm Film) Review post.
It is always interesting to re-visit an abandoned location, to see what has changed over the intervening years. This wonderful duet of decay I visited in 2016, during my first ever road trip to Europe. First up, Blue Power Plant, has been on my re-visit wishlist for a while. Second up was Chapelle des Mineurs, this was my third visit after also visiting in 2018!
These two churches were both wonderful, although very different. The first was once part of some sort of seminary. The second is an old simple family chapel, now in ruins.
Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoyed this road trip blog! Here are the rest of the behind-the-scenes snaps and preview photos from this trip, see you next time <3.
