Welcome to the inaugural issue of Obsidian’s Obscura! In issue #001, I celebrate the first anniversary of my film photography journey. Excerpt (from back cover)

A few years ago, my mom dug out my grandfather’s old camera and entrusted it to me. It is a Zenit-E, a 35mm film camera made in the USSR in the 1960s. It’s a heavy, clunky thing with a utilitarian, angular design. It is not designed for beauty; it is robust and built to last! The first two rolls of film I shot with his camera are the foundation of this inaugural zine issue. Inside, you’ll find a collection of black-and-white photographs that capture my first steps as I make my first tentative steps into the world of film photography.

Inside this issue

  • A musty box, the start of a journey
  • Loading the first roll
  • Exploring a local farm
  • The Churchyard
  • Night falls; time for some spooky fun
  • Industrial ruins of Belgium
  • Film roll two, locked and loaded
  • Exploring lost places in Poland
  • Soviet fighter planes
  • Lost in the snowy Polish mountains
  • Pierogi!

  1. Peter

Very impressed with this book. It’s especially interesting to me because I also own a Zenit E camera and have experimented with it on and off over the last 20 years or so! Great photography throughout, that captures the moods and atmospheres of each fascinating location.

  2. Adam Beltaine

A really interesting start to Obsidian’s journey, and I’m already eager for the next one! Some really haunting monochrome shots in this zine, very nicely presented and with a fascinating narrative around them that makes it all more personal. Well worth a read!

  3. Ben Taylor

A really splendid zine – high production values with an authentic, personal, story. The images are all at once ethereal, elegant, and melancholy. Really looking forward to the next one!
