The cities of Pennsylvania are littered with redundant relics. Behind closed doors and hidden deep in forests, there are decaying secrets waiting to be discovered. At the start of the twentieth century, migrants were drawn to the up-and-coming industrial giant that was Pennsylvania. There were jobs and opportunities aplenty. Then, the economic bubble burst. Factories and steel mills closed, one by one. Families left in droves in search of work and a better life elsewhere. After the mass exodus, a wealth of infrastructure was rendered obsolete. Abandoned churches lay discarded, as small scattered congregations merge together. Schools and hospitals are left to rot. Forgotten theatres, once hosting sell-out performances, now lay silent and lost. The steam locomotives and trolley cars lie rusting and disused, obsolete in the face of new technology. One by one, these hidden treasures are lost as time and the world moves on around them. This book explores the beauty that lies in these forgotten places, often hiding in plain sight on the streets of Pennsylvania.

A collection about one of the most interesting abandoned places through Pennsylvania. I don’t often buy a photographers book due to the lack of history about the buildings, but this book has it all, Great documentary and pictures! Great pleasure to read. I’ll definitely buy another book!

Bought via the photographer’s own site
I have a fascination for abandoned houses, dereliction, places where once there was life, now fallen into disrepair. Having seen some of Janine Pendleton’s photos on Twitter, I explored her website and bought this book. It came with two prints of my choice, both good quality and size.
At the beginning is a brief history of the state, and the photographs are divided into sections: churches, prisons, a trolley car graveyard, hospitals, cars, etc. Each place is named, and Ms Pendleton has explained why it fell into decay.
It’s a terrific book, with just the right amount of text to go with the photos, which are amazing. I bought a copy for my brother, and he loves it too! A great purchase for anyone who has an interest in the subject matter. Highly recommended.

Abandoned Places is a fascinating look at dereliction. Janine Pendleton has travelled through Pennsylvania, discovering abandoned and decaying objects and structures. Some beautiful, now derelict, buildings that must have been amazing in their heyday and still have a particular charm – churches and theatres among them – and even a VW graveyard.
It’s intriguing and quite compelling seeing once grand buildings and objects abandoned and, in some cases, left for nature to claim. The short written pieces about the photographs add more interest. Well worth buying.

Your beautiful book came today and I am enjoying every page. Besides your unique photographs, I am loving your in depth research about each site. It is wonderful to know the personality of each place.
I imagine you saying “Wow” a lot. You are a treasure hunter! Your talent and curiosity is fun and so,so,interesting.
Be safe exploring and photographing.
Thank you for sharing the wonderful places you’ve seen.

This book will be a great inspiration for my forays into taking photos of abandoned places myself. I love the fact that there is a lot of information about the places as well, not just the stunning pictures.
My favorites are the penitentiary and the Beetle graveyard! <3

As a ‘kindred spirit’ I’m always keen to see what others who share my interests get up too.
WOW! Beautifully shot, thoughtfully laid out and full of interesting facts.
A welcome addition to my bookcase and one that has already inspired me to perhaps travel further afield once this CV-19 madness ends.

Fantastic book that is as well written as it is shot! Give yourself a while though as you will get stuck staring at some of these amazing images for minutes on end 😉

I would highly recommend the book to anyone interested in urbex, travel and art photography. Janine has her own style with perfectly balanced, centered, and symmetrical compositions that I like very much. As a coffee table book, “Abandoned Pennsylvania” is a perfect conversation starter even if urbex subjects are not your style. Every photo has a story to tell.

Phenomenal book! It brings me back to the days when I was a teenager and I used to go to the abandoned mental hospital in my town (Haverford State Hospital). As I got older my urban exploration took a back seat but every time I see an abandoned building I can’t help but feel the urge to wonder it’s hallways and see what is inside.
This book has rekindled my interest in the abandoned and my favorite part about the book is that it gives historical background into these places forgotten by society. I still live in PA and I will travel to some of these places eventually. But if the buildings get torn down before I can travel to them I’m lucky enough to have come across this book so I can get a glimpse of these places.
While these beautiful places get knocked down they live on through this book and are honored with a description of their rich history.
I’m actually learning a lot about the state I grew up in and currently live in. I have a new found appreciation for what brought us here and how we got to where we are today.
10/10

„Abandoned Pennsylvania“ offers a great journey into the past of today’s derelict buildings of PA. The combination between high-quality photos and short texts with historical information – without revealing too much – is just perfect. It’s a highly recommendable book.

A very good impression with the book, I’m a rust and decay lover and this collection of pictures is of a great help when looking for references and ideas for the scale modeling. For me, it’s a working document of great value, as also a book for enjoying. Great pictures and a great work made by Janine, it’s great that she shares all this amount of information.

Like the book LITTLE BLACK BOOK OF DECAY, this other work also takes us to a surreal setting, with excellent photos and a very captivating theme.
John Brady –
This book is living history. The journey of the author and the quality of the photographs is fascinating.
The research that has been undertaken to accompany each featured location brings every image and location alive.
An excellent record of a place in time ….
Chris B –
Packed with extraordinary photographs, this book also includes descriptive narratives to further shed light on these fascinating abandoned places. The photography is worth the price of the book; however the additional descriptions make it a must-read for anyone interested in abandoned sites across Pennsylvania.
