The Twilight Years Care Home is a former residential facility for the elderly. The home was closed in the early 2000s, from the scarce information available. It is speculated that a change in care home regulations with regards to accessibility and bathroom regulations lead to its closure.
These photographs illustrate the state of the care home in the winter of 2016. At this time it was clear that the building was undergoing subsidence. Much of the kitchen appliances had been swallowed by a large void that had opened up. Large cracks were also forming on both exterior and interior walls, as the building was beginning to fall apart.
Downstairs, the walls and chairs of the day room lay encrusted with black mould. The floor is littered with plaster which has fallen from the crumbling ceiling. Upstairs there are small and simple bedrooms. Ivy encroaches and spreads across the chimney breast above a beautiful wrought iron fireplace.
Since my visit, much of the upper floors of Twilight Years Care Home have collapsed. Nowadays the main stairway is now almost impassable. Reaching the bedrooms, which were on the upper floor, is now virtually impossible.
This building was a clergy house for the adjacent parish church. The church itself dates back to the 12th century. Records of the clergy house indicate it was built during, or before, the mid-17th Century. However, this original house is said to have fallen into ruin. Subsequently, it was rebuilt in the 1860s.
Eventually, the church sold the clergy house in the 1980s. The new owners opened the building as a private residential home for the elderley. The care home operated for at least 20 years. The owners prided themselves on the tasteful decoration and warm friendly staff. Information suggests the care home closed around the turn of the millenium.
