The Rose House is a once-grand palace in Lebanon. Its location is absolutely stunning, offering a breath-taking view of the Mediterranean. Its striking pink façade, for which it is named, is said to have echoed the magnificent roses that previously flourished in the now-disused gardens.
The Rose House’s architecture combines traditional Ottoman characteristics with more Western influences. The main living area is typical of historic Lebanese buildings, with high ceilings and an internal triple-arched arcade leading to a balcony. The residence has a long terrace on the seaward side, perfect for basking in the sun and taking in the breath-taking panorama.
I visited this wonderful location during my 2023 Triple Arch Tour of Lebanon.
In the late 1800s, a wealthy Lebanese merchant family commissioned the construction of Rose House. Subsequently, it has played host to numerous notable individuals throughout the years, including diplomats, artists, and intellectuals. It served as a centre of cultural and social interaction for the affluent.
The Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990), however, was a turning point in the Rose House’s history. Much of the city’s historic architecture, including the Rose House, was left in ruins after years of skirmishes. Many derelict buildings like this one remain as sombre reminders of the terrible impact the war had on Lebanon.
After the civil war ended, Lebanon’s economy started to collapse. Many grand buildings, including this one, gradually fell into disrepair. As the once-vibrant pink façade faded, the exquisite furnishings and fixtures within were either removed or looted. Once a beautiful abode, the Rose House is now a dilapidated shell of its former glory. The home was sold a few years ago, but there has been little progress on the repairs since then. There are plans to convert this into a multi-use space: part residence, part art/cultural space.
