Sons of Israel Synagogue, USA

The Sons of Israel Synagogue was built in the 1920s and was once a grand and well-attended place of worship. Due to mounting repair and utility bill costs, the congregation sold the synagogue around 2010. It was bought by a realtor, who allowed them to conduct Sabbath morning services until a new buyer was found a few years later. This new owner planned to convert the building to a kollel; a type of school, an institute for advanced Judaic studies. At this point, the congregation and the old syangogue parted ways. The building has been unused for around 5 years with plans for the kollel seemingly never materialising, and the building is up for sale once more.

Although generally in good condition, peeling paint flakes from the ceiling of this abandoned synagogue. The sanctuary is impressive 650 square metres, with a multicoloured stained glass domed-skylight. The centre is emblazoned with the Magen David; the star of David. Stunning arched windows illuminate the room, on three walls as well as both stories. These also feature stained glass Magen David, as well as the Menorah (a seven -or nine-armed candle used during Hanukkah) and other important Judaic items.

At the front of the sanctuary (bema) is the Bimah, the podium where the cantor/chazzan would lead prayer services from. The Ark stands behind the Bimah; this is where the Torah scrolls would have been stored, covered by a thick curtain.

Shabbat Worship (The Sabbath Day)

Hundreds would have once worshipped here, the synagogue playing an important role in their social as well as spiritual lives. One of the most important regular services is the Shabbat (also known as the Shabbos, or the Sabbath). This important day of rest begins at sunset on Friday, and continues until nightfall of Saturday evening. This is a time of stillness and calm in ones life, a time for reflection and stillness outside of the trappings of busy modern life. Candles are lit at home before sunset, and special prayers over wine are made (a ritual known as kiddush).

Friday evening services welcome the Shabbat with special Psalms. Services of the following morning centre around Torah readings and other prayer services. The morning services would have been followed by light refreshments, the Shabbat is also ushered out with another cup of wine and more blessings

Shalom!
