Mausoleum K, Germany

Mausoleum K is a grand family tomb that serves as a final resting place for a wealthy German family. The building is a singular, circular structure that dominates the graveyard as it towers above the simple stones and monuments that surround it. However, decades of unchecked ivy and saplings have partially masked the mausoleum.

History of Mausoleum K

The mausoleum was commissioned by a wealthy family, specifically by the head, who was a well-known scientist and pastor of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He has served as pastor in this town during his later life; now it is his resting place.

Unfortunately, I can’t find much more history to share. It is said nowadays there are no living successors; there is no one to care for the family memorial.

Architecture of this German Funerary Rotunda

Mausoleum K appears to be an example of late neoclassical funerary architecture. There are two parts. The building is a rotunda, featuring a dome of coffered panels with a central opening (or oculus). Originally this aperture held stained glass, forming a floral shape. Surprisingly, some shards of cobalt blue glass remain. Light floods in through this opening, illuminating the above-ground part of the mausoleum.

The above-ground area contains a small altar, along with a carved marble memorial plaque listing the names of the family interred below. The floor has a large mosaic, obscured by dead leaves. I can make out a figure with a halo and wings, slaying a dragon-like beast. Possibly, the mosaic depicts Archangel Michael.

A wide stone staircase, with an ornate metal railing, following this pathway leads down to the undercroft. The underground area of this mausoleum holds the coffins of the family. The coffins rest in heavy wooden caskets that are adorned with metal fittings and carved Bible verses.
