A Gothic Crypt In The Forest of Scotland; an enchanting small building surrounded by a small woodland. The building was a private chapel for a prominent wealthy family. In addition, the subterranean vault below this peaceful place also serves as the family crypt.
I thoroughly enjoyed the brief walk through the woods, on a warm early summers day back in 2021. Weaving my way through the trees, taking my time and enjoying the sounds of the birds in the trees. I would very much like to revisit this location, perhaps with better light and to take more photos of the enchanting exterior.
The Gothic Crypt In The Forest was build in the mid-1800s. Built out of local sandstone, the building is small but beautiful. Stepped buttresses support the exterior walls. The roof is tall and narrow, with the usual steep pitch of Gothic buildings. The heavy wooden double doors are studded, in addition to have decorative scrolls and Fleur Di’ Lis metalwork. Above the door is a pointed arch which would have once held stained glass.
Stepping inside, the small space is relatively plain. At the far end of the chapel is a pointed arched Gothic window which is now partially boarded. The vaulted ceiling is tall and arched with strong ribs. Also there are long vines dangling down, having worked their way down through the roof. The floor has red and black tiles.
On the left side, roughly at the mid point, there is a patch of concrete with steel rebar sticking up out of it. There is a hole smashed, just big enough to squeeze through. Down in the dark is the family crypt that includes 7 coffins. Additionally there is a bricked up shelf which likely represents the resting place of another family member.

Thanks Carla! I am working on this week’s post now, something else from the UK but very different to this. Hope you like rust and green walls 😄
I love this series of photos. It’s like something straight out of a fantasy game like The Witcher.
But then again, I haven’t found a photo of yours I *don’t* like. I found your website whilst bored at work one day and been browsing it daily since and never get bored.
Thanks so much Mike, I agree it does have a very Witcher feel. Or maybe Elder Scrolls! Sounds like you are doing a real deep dive into the archives if you are popping on daily, some long gone treasures to uncover as you scroll that far back 😀
I love the intricate red tiles on the floor. That’s what drew me into that photograph. X
They really add a little bit of interest, I adore old tiles also 🙂
It’s sad I hope someone has the decency to keep it up some as the pass by.
I suspect this one is destined to melt back into the earth, but what a beautiful spot it has to watch time pass by 🙂
