Red Morgue is an abandoned morgue/mortuary in Hungary. Curiously, no information could be found online about the history of this location. It lies in the basement of a large hospital or medical school complex. This location is now demolished.
The large rectangular mortuary slab is made of red marble with white/cream-coloured veins, which contrast beautifully against the olive-green wall tiles. The doors have orange-tinted glass. The long lights zigzag across the ceiling. There is a fume cupboard, either for storage of chemicals or as a ventilated dissection area. The shower cubicles are where the pathologists would decontaminate themselves after an autopsy. On the wall next to the slab is a light box, for viewing x-rays.
Off from the main room is a white tiled corridor with three cadaver fridges, with trays to store four bodies in each.
This location was very memorable, as when we tried to leave we found the door had been sealed behind us. “Locked inside a morgue in Hungary” is currently near the top of my list when I am recounting tales of adventures in far off countries.
