The Knight’s Hotel, Wales

The Knight’s Hotel is an abandoned, ruinous hotel perched atop a hill in North Wales. Once one of the region’s most luxurious and prestigious getaways, this gothic hotel is now a charred and skeletal echo of its former glory. It was ravaged by fire several years ago; half of the hotel collapsed, and the other half is decaying away now that it has been left exposed to the famously soggy Welsh weather.

I have visited The Knight’s Hotel several times recently, observing a steady and visible decline. On earlier visits, the interior still held a collection of intriguing items and antiques. One by one, these have vanished over time.

There are (or were) several suits of armour: the kind mediaeval knights used to wear. The old wood-panelled entrance hall is an intriguing scene, where a collapsed area meets a curiously intact area. The stained glass skylight above is miraculously unscathed. The old restaurant and bar, at the far end of the building, remain totally untouched by fire and decay.

History of The Knight’s Hotel

The Knight’s Hotel was constructed in the 1870s as a mansion for an important politician. Built using stone quarried from the local area, the house was intended as a grand residence and retreat. Its position was chosen specifically to overlook the estuary and the mountains beyond.

The building eventually transitioned from a private estate into a luxury country house hotel. It became a notable destination in North Wales, particularly during the mid-20th century. The guest list included many famous names, including Winston Churchill and Sean Connery.

Eventually, the hotel closed in the mid-2000s and became a private residence once more. The local community, furious that the loss of the luxury hotel would negatively impact tourism in the region, responded with anger. The owners stated they had plans to restore the building to its former glory.

Around 15 years ago, disaster struck. A huge blaze engulfed the Knight’s Hotel. The blaze broke out in the early morning, resulting in the death of one person and causing irreparable structural damage. The fire destroyed the roof and much of the interior timberwork, leading to the complete collapse of half of the hotel and severe damage to the remaining structures.

Without a roof, the building has been left to the elements for several years. The high rainfall in this region of Wales has accelerated the rot of the remaining floor joists it is only a matter of time before the entire interior collapses.

Architecture of this Welsh Victorian Gothic Revival Hotel

The hall is a Victorian Gothic Revival structure, characterised by its steep gables and a prominent square tower that gives the building a castle-like profile. Once there was elaborate wood panelling and a central grand staircase. Large bay windows were a key feature, designed to provide panoramic views of the estuary from the main reception rooms.

Sadly, this Victorian part of the hotel suffered the brunt of the fire damage and has now totally collapsed. The exterior masonry remains largely intact, though the decorative stone chimneys now stand over an empty shell.

There is also a newer extension that was added in the 1970s. This section of the hotel has suffered moderate to light fire damage.

An abandoned Welsh hotel left in limbo

At present, The Knight’s Hotel is a ruin on the verge of collapse. No definitive plans for restoration have materialised, likely due to the prohibitive costs associated with stabilising a fire-damaged Victorian ruin of this scale. Plans have been put forward to demolish the building and build houses on the site, but so far these have been rejected.

  1. What an incredible structure. Sad that much of it is gone. Still, this is a major part of Welsh history. I realize the cost would be prohibitive, but couldn’t at least part of this be salvaged, perhaps turned into a museum?

Are the bar and restaurant the only sections left standing, or are there other parts as well?

    • Aye it was such a loss, sadly all the Victorian parts collapsed. There wasn’t much more left standing outside of the areas I photographed, a few hallways maybe and small half collapsed rooms.
