Teatro Antiqua is an abandoned theatre in Portugal. This beautiful space was once a hub of cultural and social events. Sadly, the sounds of laughter and applause are now only a faint echo, as the theatre has been abandoned for many years. Unfortunately, it is hard to pinpoint exactly when this theatre closed down. Perhaps 35 or more years ago!
I explored this location during my 2022 Portugal Tour.
The theatre’s origins can be traced back to the mid-19th century, when an old community storehouse was transformed into a simple theatre. However, this early theatrical venture was short-lived and failed due to financial difficulties. The building stood vacant for several years, falling quickly into ruin.
Luckily, a new owner stepped in in the early 1900s, saving Teatro Antiqua from demolition. The theatre underwent a significant renovation, expanding its capacity and welcoming back even bigger audiences. Throughout most of the 20th century, the theatre thrived, hosting a diverse range of events. From theatrical performances and charitable gatherings to public meetings and cinema screenings. Many renowned Portuguese artists graced its stage over the years.
However, the Teatro Antiqua glory days came to an end in the 1980s. Government safety committees began to express worries about the building’s safety, insisting there was a considerable fire risk. They called for closure. Requests for grants to fund renovations were denied, and the theatre gradually fell into disrepair.
Teatro Antiqua can be entered through the main street-facing door as well as side entrances on either side of the stage. The main lower floor seating, in the centre of the room, has removable folding chairs organised into rows of six. Additionally, there is a private box on either side of the stage. There is also more seating on the ground floor, with simple, stepped benches encircling the room. Finally, the upper floor features a horseshoe-shaped balcony with iron railings. The stage is sloped and has a proscenium arch. Part of a backdrop remains from the last production – some sort of landscape seen with trees.
