This abandoned American Football Stadium lays crumbling and sun-bleached. Despite being out of regular use for over a decade, the grass is still looked after and the field markings seemingly well-maintained.
This stadium was built in 1940, and was also used for concerts and other events besides university football matches. Seating capacity was over 35,000. The university football team relocated their home ground to a more modern stadium in the early 2000’s. The field still saw some action during high school football games, before being acquired by a marketing company with plans to renovate and revive the structure for professional football use. As with a lot of ambitious plans, these fell through due to fears of the costs involved in making the area safe enough to be re-purposed.
The stadium was later condemned, and demolition began shortly after we visited. Many of the blue benches had been ripped out by the time we arrived. Many of these are piled up at the lower entrance, and along the edge of the field.
As we passed by the stadium for a second time one evening, we stopped to take a sunset shot from the upper levels before continuing our journey westward.
