Sometimes you see photos of such an amazing place, you promise yourself one day you are going to visit. Well, 2nd December 2017 was the day we set out to visit “Casino Royale”. Our journey took us to wintry Romania, in search of some opulent Art Nouveau architecture.

We spent several hours photographing the casino, amid flurries of pigeon dive-bombs. The soft whistle of the wind through broken windows, and crash of the waves outside. The beautiful seashell-shaped window in the main room was spectacular to behold. The ornate staircase and chandelier proved tricky to photograph, curiously seeming much smaller that I had imagined they would be. There were two other large halls, all retaining their original chandeliers. Well worth the trip in itself!

We took some selfies on the main stage and on the stairway, lovely mementos of a fantastic day with good friends. A very friendly stray dog followed us around as we took external photos, being so cute he ended up stealing our attention away from the casino for some time.

Romanian certainly did not disappoint, providing us with some other amazing and diverse locations to photograph. We visited a dark and dank prison/gulag within the walls of a live prison, passing through security checks and being locked inside by our escort (for security reasons). Several ruined synagogues with collapsing roofs and domes, illustrated the legacy of once vibrant Jewish communities. A dilapidated newspaper headquarters above a bustling city street. A highlight for me was the large house, which was also a museum (undergoing renovation at present).

Driving in Bucharest on a major national holiday is not something I would recommend, and I was thankful to not be behind the wheel! Total gridlock, even late into the evening. Long night-time drives with many laughs along the way, and some great traditional food and hospitality.

  1. Fantastic – I wish I’d known about this place when I went to Romania, but as you say, it’s definitely worth a trip back! I love seeing inside (obviously), but my favourite pic is the one with the dog outside.

    • It reminds me of a dog that followed me on a 12-ish mile walk in Georgia. Every time I stopped (usually for food) it lay or sat a respectable distance away.

    • Thanks sir! I would definitely say this place is worth a special trip for. Romania is such an awesome country, I never need an excuse to return! I loved the dog as well, happy I captured a photo of him looking wistfully off into the distance toward the casino ?
