After missing out on a group trip to Italy in June due some very poorly timed work-related travel, it was time embark on some serious summer fun! Somewhere new, and further afield than the usual Euro Urbex routes. My good travel buddy had a Portugal map all ready to go, so we arranged this trip to coincide with a break in my work schedule.

We flew into Faro one Sunday afternoon, picking up a (hideously under-powered) Seat Ibiza with only 2700km on the clock. We returned it 5 days later with nearly double the mileage and some unforgettable memories. An extraordinary amount of near-death experiences will make me question driving in Portuguese cities ever again, highlights of what we encountered were; reversing up a motorway to take a missed junction, several counts of driving the wrong way up a one-way street, zero lane discipline and a Mercedes driver who had clearly played too much Grand Theft Auto!

All our driving was rewarded with some amazing locations, many of which have been one my hit-list for some time. The breathtaking grandeur of the staircases with balconies at Dictatorship Palace, the stillness of Oval Crypta, the surprise of opening the doors at Seminary Of Emptiness / Seminário ST. One location will imminently be undergoing renovation, and we were let in by a wonderfully hospitable lady who gave us free reign of the grounds for the afternoon.

An unforgettable 5 days of photography intermixed with relaxed afternoon beers and chilling on the beach. A perfect blend of exploring in the day, and relaxing in the evening soaking up the atmosphere in a different city every night. We had plenty of time to enjoy what Portugal had to offer, outside of abandoned buildings and lost places.

As I write this I am flying to Germany for a weekend of Belgian/German adventures. Time to grab a power nap before Part Two of the adventures begin!

  1. Dictatorship Palace nobodies’s knows anything here by that name. And by the architecture could be well before Salazar. Ovalcript, could be in an unversity or something similar. Nice photos. Good work.
