Introducing My New Limited Edition Photography Zine – Obsidian’s Obscura

I’m very excited to announce the release of the first issue of my new photography zine, Obsidian’s Obscura!

I enjoy the process of creating something new, and I always strive to think up new ways to share my work in a more tangible way than just online. Recently, I have thought zines could be a wonderful format for this. A new way for me to present my photos in a curated and cohesive way, while also adding in my own personal stories and commentary.

What is a zine, I hear you ask?

A zine is a self-published, small-circulation book or magazine. Zines can be about anything. From photography to music to poetry, short stories or illustrated journals. They are often used as a platform for self-expression and creativity. Zines are typically printed in small batches in a single short run, creating a limited-edition collection of work.

They present the perfect format to present a themed portfolio or to share the results of a recent artistic project. With a lower page count and simpler printing process than a book, they are a very affordable way to collect and enjoy photography in print.

Introducing “Obsidian’s Obscura”

Obsidians Obscura Zine 001 Front And Back Covers

Obsidian’s Obscura is a zine showcasing an eclectic range of images, highlights from my photographic adventures. Through these pages, I will explore and experiment with a new way to share my own unique view of the world. There will be a heavy focus on my film photography journey, as well as presenting themed portfolios and other standalone projects.

Obsidian’s Obscura is available as a limited-edition print run, numbered and signed. A celebration of the ephemeral nature of this publication.

November 2023 – Issue #001 – …AND SO, IT BEGINS

Obsidian’s Obscura #001 starts at the beginning of my film photography journey. A few years ago, my mom dug out my grandfather’s old camera and entrusted it to me. It is a Zenit-E, a 35mm film camera made in the USSR in the 1960s. It’s a heavy, clunky thing with a utilitarian, angular design. It is not designed for beauty; it is robust and built to last!

The first two rolls of film I shot with his camera are the foundation of this inaugural zine issue. Inside, you’ll find a collection of black-and-white photographs that capture my first, tentative steps into the world of film photography.

The zine is 32 pages long and contains 40 photos, presented alongside my personal narrative. I begin around my hometown, snapping local scenes, before progressing to shooting abandoned places in Belgium and Poland.

It is strictly limited to 20 printed copies, signed and numbered. There is also an digital version available to download.
