Goodbye 2024 – Photo Highlights From This Years Adventures

As 2024 comes to a close, I spend a few hours reflecting on the past year’s photographic journey. While 2023 saw extensive travel, this year certainly felt slower in pace in terms of the number of big road trips and tours of far-off lands. This year has still seen adventure aplenty, with several amazing tours abroad and many day/weekend outings around the UK. I’ve also dedicated significant portion of the summer to delving deeper into film photography, including the learning how to develop own film and exploring a wider range of cameras and formats. As the days shortened, I channeled my energy into the creation and release of my 2025 calendar, issue #002 of my Obsidian’s Obscura zine, and a comprehensive, updated second edition of my Little Black Book Or Decay.

I hope you enjoy this retrospective look at the highlights of 2024, including brand new and unseen behind the scenes photos.

Overview of my 2024 Urbex adventures

Portugal Road Trip 2024 The House And Hydro Tour Beautiful Abandoned House

My third urbex trip to Portugal

I kicked off the 2024 adventures with a five-day springtime road trip around Portugal

  • Explored beautiful abandoned houses, tucked away in the rural regions of northern Portugal.
  • I revisited the President’s Palace, still abandoned and further deteriorating since my 2017 visit
  • Explored a trio of hydroelectric powerplants, one in ruins and filled with a verdant carpet of plant life.
Hungary & Romania Road Trip 2024 Pink Spa Corridor

Exploring Romanian ruins

It has been a long time since I visited Romania, my first visit was way back in 2017! Here is a rundown of the some of the places I visited in my 2024 Romania Road Trip;

  • Several Communist-era (1947-1989) locations, including an auditorium and two prisons.
  • Romania has many abandoned synogogues, left without congregations in the aftermath of the Holocaust.
  • Biserică, old churches from the German-speaking Transylvanian Saxon community that flourished before emigrating in the wake of World War 2 (and the rise of the communist regime in Romania)
  • An exceptionally beautiful powerplant, with pristine Art Deco style control room and turbine hall.
Hungary & Romania Road Trip 2024 Hungarian Mega Bunker

Going underground in Hungary

I drove overnight from Romania to Hungary, making two trips into one extended adventure!

  • Three adrenaline-filled visits to abandoned powerplants.
  • I went underground into five awesome bunkers, spread across the length and breadth of the country.
  • Explored two Soviet-era army barracks.
  • Visited a lakeside hotel with 1970s decor.
Photo Highlights From 2024 Janine Pendleton Pyramiden

An arctic expedition to Svalbard

I was lucky enough to visit Svalbard for four days over the summer, exploring the Soviet ghost town of Pyramiden. I have long dreamed of visiting this northern coal mining town, so this trip was a highlight for me!

Seemingly, I was so engrossed in taking photos that I neglected to make time for any behind-the-scenes blog content! My focus was on covering as much ground as possible in the short time I had and documenting the town both as digital cameras and also across several rolls of Fujifilm 200. My plan is to release a photobook and/or zine to showcase my extensive photo collection!

Ireland 2024 The Autumn Tour Janine Pendleton In Abandoned Shop

Wild camping and urbex in Ireland

I was excited to have another amazing Ireland trip this year

  • Explore fascinating abandoned residences, from simple rural homesteads to grand decaying manor houses.
  • Stepping into an old corner shop, seemingly abandoned for 20 years.
  • Old petrol pumps, ruined churches, a cute yellow-walled school.
Photo Highlights From 2024 Cyprus Rusty Bus

A few sneaky locations in Cyprus

Thanks to my understanding family, for letting me hijack part of the Christmas holiday to Cyprus!

  • Revisted Varosha (Famagusta).
  • Made several stop-offs and detours to photograph abandoned village buses in the mountains.
  • Enjoyed a colourful sunset shoot at a dramatic shipwreck.
  • Shot a church ruin at the edge of a reservoir.

DAy trips and weekends exploring England & Wales

  • A revisit to some of my favourite vehicle graveyards. Shooting old Rovers, Jaguars, Mercedes, Ford Model T, taxis, buses and fire trucks.
  • Exploring the maze-like corridors of an Art Deco courthouse with a bonus re-visit to another courthouse in the same town!
  • A day trip to Scotland, and a lucky explore of a collapsing courthouse with several floors of dark, creepy cells.
  • An old morgue, dating back to World War 2.
  • A simple Welsh cottage filled with vintage items.
  • An old rustic sawmill with ivy-draped walls and ceiling beams.
  • An abandoned observatory, still housing a telescope.
  • Laboratories and offices of a huge chemical works.

My Analog photography adventures continue

Developing my own black & white and colour (C-41) film

This year, my film photography journey continued! Most importantly, I am now developing all of my film myself at home. Starting out with black and white, I quickly progressed onto colour chemistry (C-41) at the start of summer. I developed a variety of formats (35mm, 120, 16mm and 127l) and also began experimenting with pushing film 1 and 2 stops!

Shooting even more varieties of analogue film, posting more film reviews

This year I continued to explore different film stocks, and wrote a bunch of film reviews! I love the warm tones of Kodak and have reviewed Kodak Gold, Kodak Ektar and Kodak ColorPlus.

This year I shot more colour than black and white, but I also published reviews and galleries for Fomapan Action 400 and Kosmo Agent Shadow.

Some of my favourite film photos so far, are those from last year’s trip to Lebanon that I shot on Washi X.

Expanding my film camera collection

This year I picked up a few new (old) film cameras, to add to my growing collection!

  • Minolta 16 MG-S, a 1970s 16mm sub-minature camera from Japan
  • Lubitel 166B. Medium Format (6×6, 4.5×6) twin-lens reflex (TLR), 1980s USSR
  • Lomo 135BC. 35mm USSR-made camera from the 1980s
  • Kodak Vest Pocket Series III. A folding bellow 127 camera, from the 1930s

Love film photography? <3

You can check out more of my film photography in the Film & Vintage Lens area of my blog, where I share film stock reviews alongside photos I have taken. I have also added two film photography portfolios to my website, covering monochrome and colour photos.
