My passion is exploration of abandoned places, through photography. Answering the question “What lies beyond that “No Entry” sign?”. This is where you will find me, camera in hand.
Urban Exploration – Exploration of abandoned, lost, decaying and forgotten places. Places which are not usually seen by the public.
Dark Tourism – Documentation of places with a historical or contemporary association with death, macabre, catastrophe and tragedy.
Welcome! I am Janine Pendleton, also known as Obsidian Urbex Photography. My interest in urban exploration photography started in August 2015 with an impromptu trip to that classic UK site, Camelot Theme Park. I used to go here as a kid with my parents, so seeing its dilapidated and desolate state some 15 years later struck a chord somewhere inside me.
I was hooked! I spent the rest of 2015 was trawling the UK in search of abandoned places, making new friends along the way. In Spring 2016 I had my first trip to Europe, and things escalated from there. Over the last 9 years, I travelled to places that I never thought could exist. I have had road trips and adventures aplenty, making friends and getting in situations that seem almost impossible to believe as I sit at home writing this.
Here is to many, many more adventures and photographs to come!

I live near Manchester, in the North West of England.
I have explored over 800 abandoned locations! Of this, only about 350 are uploaded to my website in my Locations section which includes photos and a written article from each of these places.
I have visited 26 countries, exploring lost places in each. In the USA specifically, I have explored 10 states. You can find a full (and every growing) list here.
Yes, I have visited all the Locations which feature on my page. Yes, all the photos are my own. The only exceptions are candid photos of me on the Behind-The-Scenes page. In this case, the photographer is acknowledged in the captions.
Here have included details of my current (and previous) Photographic Equipment below this FAQ.
Quite simply, I find a lot of beauty in natural decay. No two buildings decline in exactly the same way. It is always interesting to see what happens to these places when they are neglected and forgotten. Visiting these places is like stepping back in time. You get a glimpse of a time decades in the past.
You enter only for a brief moment, your life’s journey and that of the abandoned place are aligned as you explore. With a click of the shutter, you capture the state of a building at a single point in time. With digital photography, that moment can be preserved (in theory) forever. It is rendered as millions of pixels, uploaded to computers and servers. That single snap can be shared with people all over the world through the internet and social media. In this way, these places and moments can live long after a building (and even the photographer) is gone.
One thing I adore above all, is the amazing variety. I think of my adventures akin to a game of Pokemon; I want to collect a diverse range of types. I get especially excited to visit something I haven’t seen before. Anything that is quirky or enigmatic also get bonus points.
There are a few types of locations that I do love more than others. These are; greenhouses, MiG airplanes, Citroen DS cars and anything Art Deco.
No, I have never broken into a building to get inside. I am against causing any form of damage or destruction. This does mean that I might drive a long way to a place, and not get inside. This is all part of the hobby, and I nearly always have some back-up ideas on-route (just in case). Sometimes I may try a location multiple times over several years before finally getting inside. Often, perseverance is rewarded on a long enough time scale.
Early on in my photographic adventures, I visited a small house. Inside there were many vintage clocks. One of them, fascinated me. I am unsure why, it wasn’t anything special or valuable. I picked it up, I thought about it. I put it back down and took some photos instead. These things that I am lucky enough to photograph are not mine, and taking them is theft. Therefore, I do not take anything from the places I visit.
I get a lot of requests for locations, which come in various guises, in social media messages and emails. Personally, I do not share information with people I do not know. This includes giving “hints” about rough areas or city names. With that said, I do not mean any disrespect to or make any judgement on anyone who asks. It is simply a stance I have taken based on the reasons outlined in my Urbex FAQ, and I kindly ask people to respect that.
However, I do love talking to people via DM and email. If you are a like-minded explorer wishing to genuinely connect and become friends, please do get in touch. I travel a lot and enjoy meeting new people. I often share locations among my trusted friends, I just require some time to build trust with new people.
Of course! I am happy to chat about licensing arrangements for a variety of projects, both private and commercial. Find out more and send an enquiry on my Photography Licensing page.
