Illuminati Church, Germany

The Illuminati Church is a beautiful church in Germany. I explored this location in the summer of 2020, as part of the Germany 2020 GDR Ballroom Tour. This location was visited with permission from the keyholder.

Brief History of the Illuminati Church

The Illuminati Church was built in the mid-1600s, in the Italian Renaissance architecture style. The church was first renovated in the mid-1800s. Additionally, the pipe order was also added at this time. In the early 1900s, dry rot was discovered and another round of emergency repair work was carried out.

The Illuminati Church was still used for funeral services until the 1970s. After this, there has been preservation work, and the building is open for permission visits.

Iconography and history – The Eye of Providence

The codename of this location, Illuminati Church, is certainly an evocative one. The name conjures up images of secret societies and sinister dealings. The name comes from the large eye on the ceiling, which some has likened to the “Illuminati Eye” symbol. In reality, the symbol is the Eye of Providence.

The roots of the symbol are difficult to trace, but it probably originated in the 1400s or 1500s. The symbol is an eye enclosed in a triangle, that is surrounded by rays of light. This symbol is a reference to the all-seeing eye of God, and his divine presence watching over humanity. The Eye of Providence has ties to Christianity, specifically the Holy Trinity and the omnipresence of God.

In 1782 the symbol was incorporated into the Great Seal of the United States, as well as later being incorporated onto the reverse side of the one-dollar bill. It also appears on various seals and coats of arms on the other side of the Atlantic, including; Lithuania, Estonia, Poland and the UK.

The Eye of Providence has been a key symbol associated with the Freemasons. They have used the symbol since 1797. In this case, the symbol is a reminder of the Great Architect of the Universe (God) observes all the deeds and thoughts of humanity. More recently, it has been cited as a symbol of the Illuminati. The Illuminati are said to be a global secret society purportedly charged with manipulating government, corporate and political powers to establish a New World Order shaped and controlled by them.

  1. The Eye of Providence is a lightning rod for conspiracy theorists because it is very much hidden in plain sight: not only does it appear on countless churches and Masonic buildings worldwide, it also features on the reverse of the American one-dollar bill as well as the Great Seal of the United States.

    • This is very true, its prevalence does lend fuel to the fire I think 🙂

    • Beautiful Church, stunning photography, brilliantly researched write-up. Congratulations on a brilliantly all together piece of work.
