The Pripyat Amusement Park was due to open on 1st May 1986 in celebration of May Day, but everything changed on 26th of April when the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster occurred at Reactor No. 4 just a few kilometers away.
Several reports claim Pripyat Amusement Park still had an opening ceremony in the days immediately after the explosion at the nearby Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Photos of people queuing to go on the rides are also said to exist. Other reports state the park never opened at all.
Today the iconic Ferris wheel stands rusted and abandoned. Nearby a collapsed swing boat and ceased parachute ride. On the opposite side of the park, several bumper cars sit inside their staging area.
