Abandoned ballrooms litter the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). Every town seems to have had one.
These entertainment venues were popular right up until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
For fifty years it tirelessly ripped through the countryside in search of coal. The machine has 10 buckets, each able to hold 1.5m3 of earth and rock (approx. 10 bath tubs).
Subsequently, they began to fall out of fashion in the newly reunified Germany. One by one they began to close.
Empty and forgotten the ballroom decays, year after year.
Two concave strips run along the ceiling, parallel to the long axis of the room. These strips are striped red and white, like a candy cane.
